Our plans to build a Science Discovery Centre and Planetarium continue to be developed. In November 2021, with support from the Towns Fund, we appointed a design team and are on track to submit a planning application in June this year. The new development will reuse our redundant underground Victorian reservoir and will include an exhibition space, meeting rooms, a café and a state-of-the-art planetarium. The new facilities will be used to expand our outreach and excite even more visitors, including experience days for schools.
Whilst we have been allocated core capital funding through the Towns Fund programme, more support is needed. There are a wide range of items that potential funders can pledge to support, from the planetarium projection screen to the staircase and lift, with something to suit every budget. We would also welcome discussions with potential main sponsors interested in supporting larger units. Further support will be crucial in helping to secure the future of the project thereby inspiring the next generation of talent to ensure the local labour market has the STEM skills employers need to drive the economy forward.
